Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
